The most famous of all: Lake Nantua!
Lake Nantua is undoubtedly the most iconic lake in the Ain. Of glacial origin, covering 141 hectares, 2.7 kilometers long, 650 meters wide, and 43 meters deep, this gem is located in the heart of the Haut-Bugey region.
Must-Do Hikes and Mountain Bike Trails
All around the lake, there are several very pleasant hiking trails. For example, Visorando offers a 14.78km loop overlooking Nantua and the surrounding forests. Visit Visorando

Lake Genin
Lake Genin is a true high-altitude gem in the Haut-Bugey region. Located at an altitude of approximately 830–850 meters, it is often nicknamed the “Little Canada of the Haut-Bugey” due to its forested surroundings, meadows, and tranquility. Classified as a Sensitive Natural Area (ENS), this natural lake is managed to preserve its wild and peaceful atmosphere.
Hiking and mountain biking trails you absolutely must try!
Hiking: A must-do 14.9 km loop trail is available from Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Tourisme: the route allows you to discover the lake, the surrounding peat bogs, and panoramic views of the fir trees.
Mountain biking: The “VTT 67 vert – Lac Genin et les hauts de Charix” trail (FFC Ain Forestière area) offers an out-and-back ride of approximately 8 km, with a climb through the woods and panoramic views of the lake. plateauderetord.fr

Lake Sylans
Lake Sylans is another very interesting natural lake in the Ain department, although less well-known than Nantua or Genin. It is located near the village of Neyrolles and has a rich industrial past with the ruins of old icehouses on its banks.

Hiking and mountain biking trails not to be missed!
Even though fewer routes are listed, it is possible to connect this lake with walks around the Nantua gorge or via short circuits linking Sylans to neighboring lakes.
Parking
A small parking area is located near the icehouse ruins, on the lake shore, accessible from the departmental road leading to Les Neyrolles. The main access point is popular with visitors to the Sensitive Natural Area.
