The tour through the Grottes du Cerdon

The visit to the Grottes du Cerdon offers a route with changes in elevation and stairs.
It is comparable to a short hike, due to the difference in height between the site reception area and the cave entrance, and then inside the cave where visitors discover the different chambers at a pleasant pace that is accessible to anyone with good mobility.

The Cerdon Caves trail, nestled in the Jura Mountains in the Ain department, is an invitation to a journey to the heart of the Earth and through time. From the very start, you descend on foot into an ancient underground river, a testament to the millennia-long work of water on the limestone: a labyrinth of magnificent galleries sculpted by the great ice ages, offering a mysterious and captivating atmosphere.

The main route, lasting approximately 45 minutes to an hour, can be explored independently or with a guide who will tell you the geological history of the site and describe the formation of the concretions, stalactites, and stalagmites that line the path.

The trail then opens onto a majestic entrance, the culmination of this subterranean exploration. From there, visitors in good physical condition can continue their walk to a viewpoint perched on a cliff, offering a breathtaking panorama of the Cerdon Valley and its vineyards. This more strenuous extension takes about 30 minutes round trip and provides a connection between the underground world and the light outside.

The visit can be enhanced with an audio guide available in several languages or with a guided tour at set times for those who would like a more detailed explanation.

In addition to the geological trail, the site also offers immersive experiences such as torchlight tours or prehistoric workshops in the adjacent park, where children and adults alike can try their hand at ancestral techniques (fire-making, pottery, cave painting, archaeological digs, etc.).
