The Ain gorges
The Ain gorges: a natural jewel between the Jura and Bugey, waiting to be rediscovered!
It’s impossible to travel through the Bugey region without visiting one of its must-see spots, usually only found on postcards: welcome to the Ain Gorges, nestled between mountains and valleys!
Here, turquoise water meanders between the rocks, the Cize-Bolozon Viaduct stands proudly above the valley, and iconic locations like Île Chambod and the Château de Thol offer a refreshing escape in the heart of the Ain. Here are a few hikes and walks to discover the Ain Gorges.
The most photogenic: the Cize viewpoint and the Bolozon Viaduct!
This iconic hike in the heart of nature within the Ain Regional Natural Park allows you to admire one of the most photographed landscapes in the Ain: the Cize-Bolozon Viaduct, a unique railway and road structure in France. The trail alternates between wooded areas, river views, and panoramic sections, and not far away, there’s an artificial stone jetty offering stunning views of the river’s two branches. A feast for the eyes!

The most aquatic option: The heights of Île Chambod and the Ain Valley!
Île Chambod, famous for its calm waters and almost Mediterranean setting, offers a superb loop trail winding through riverbanks, forests, and viewpoints to explore the Gorges de l’Ain. Ideal for families or for relaxing after a swim.
Île Chambod is THE little corner of paradise for adventurers and nature lovers. Beyond hiking, consider a kayaking trip, a picnic by the river, or simply admiring the sunset over the Bugey region. Wildlife, flora, breathtaking panoramas, and a relaxing atmosphere: that’s why everyone falls under the spell of Île Chambod!

A complete immersion in nature and heritage
Around the Ain gorges, you’ll also find heritage gems such as the Château de Thol, the typical villages of the Bugey region, and ancient Roman roads carved into the rock.
It’s an ideal playground for creating your own itineraries (maps and guidebooks available at tourist offices), or for simply escaping for an afternoon by the river.
Whether for hiking, observing, swimming, cycling, or simply admiring the Jura landscapes, the Ain Gorges are an unmissable destination for immersing yourself in unspoiled and spectacular nature.
And what about the surrounding area? Hidden waterfalls, secluded gorges, and wild escapes!
Around the Ain Gorges, other landscapes are worth exploring further. The Thurignin Gorges, narrower and wilder, offer an intimate setting where cliffs plunge directly into the river. The area is ideal for a quiet hike, punctuated by viewpoints overlooking Mont Balvay and the cool atmosphere typical of the Jura valleys.
Further on, some small local waterfalls—discreet yet photogenic—remind us that the region abounds with springs, resurgences, and streams that sculpt the landscape, alongside caves like those of Cerdon. And for curious travelers who like to compare great natural sites, a nod can be made to the Jonte gorges in the southern Massif Central: another spectacular, more vertical canyon, which by contrast highlights the verdant and soothing character of the Ai River.
A perfect addition to enrich a nature-filled tourist stay in the Jura region, offering heritage sites and panoramic views.
