The Cerdon Caves

During the Jurassic period, an ocean covered the current location of the Cerdon Caves. The sediment deposits at the bottom of this ocean transformed into limestone and rose to the surface after the waters receded (65 million years ago). Limestone is a crumbly rock that is easily permeated by water. It is water that has carved out the cavities of the present-day caves. Indeed, an underground river resulting from the melting glaciers of the last Ice Age (which ended approximately 12,000 years ago) eroded the rock.

These caves are located one hour from Annecy in the Ain department. Beautiful hikes around them can round out the day, and it is also possible to extend the visit by participating in prehistoric activities in the adjacent park.

Several lovely picnic areas are located throughout the park.
