Create your own paint with natural ochres
The cave paintings of the Chauvet Cave were created between 32,000 and 21,000 years ago. Although the scientific community has not yet agreed on the purpose of these drawings, it seems clear that they are not merely decorations.
So were they magical incantations for hunting, part of a shaman’s role, or were our ancestors trying to leave a trace and communicate with future generations?
For 30 minutes, show your skills using pigments and other natural elements.
Create your own prehistoric painting on a wooden board.

Prehistoric painting: a creative workshop
The prehistoric painting activity is open to visitors aged 4 to 99. Creating a piece together in pairs or groups of three is possible. Branches and wild boar bristles are used as brushes, and pine resin serves as glue. Natural pigments provide the colors: iron oxide produces brown, clay gives ochre, and charcoal provides black. Mixing substances creates new tones. Add a little water and you’re ready to illustrate like in the Paleolithic era.
Using natural paints reduces the risk of allergies. Taking part in the workshops offers an immersion into prehistoric history. Activity leaders share their knowledge of techniques and help younger participants. The cave drawing session takes place under shelter. All activities at the Parc de Loisirs Préhistoriques des Grottes du Cerdon run even in rainy weather.
Prehistoric painting workshop: combining usefulness with pleasure
Everyone progresses at their own pace. Drawing develops creativity. The Paleolithic mammoth is among children’s favorite animals. Cave lions, deer, and bison also inspire artists.
The activity lasts 30 minutes. You can then visit the cave galleries or join other workshops.
An unforgettable day discovering the Grottes du Cerdon
The formation of the caves began thousands of years ago. According to scientific dating, prehistoric people lived there more than 10,000 years ago.
The leisure park opened in 2014. Visitors from all over the world have been coming for 10 years to enjoy the activities: pottery, prehistoric painting workshops, spear-throwing with an atlatl, jewelry making, fire-making techniques, and an introduction to archaeology. These numerous activities guarantee memorable family moments. A day at the park helps you disconnect and focus on what really matters.
